I blocked in this painting quickly using some pastel brushes, which are more about getting color down than about rendering. I've been favoring one or two brushes in Painter for awhile now and I think it's time to branch out! Maybe this will be my experimental piece, though I've already run back to my oi pastel brushes :-). Hey, I still want it to match in style to the Friesian.

Friesian Winter - Finish

The Friesian painting is complete! This was for the holidays, so I added jinglebells to the halter, and wove some red and green strands into the mane and tail. I particularly love how the snow turned out -- I used a watercolor salt crystal effect, plus a little airbrush and just dabs of an interesting brush for the snowflakes.

This is an underpainting for a "holiday friesian." He'll be charging through the snow, and be decorated with a red halter and maybe some jingle bells and holly in his mane...things like that. It won't scream "CHRISTMAS!" but it will be wintry and pretty :-).

Buckskin Highland - In Progress 2

I worked a little on this paint sketch this afternoon. The Highland has an interesting, blocky head. I'm not sure I've quite got it yet. I'm also not happy with the dark background, as we begin to lose the dark coloration on the nose and legs into it. I think it needs more "storminess," more variation in cloudy color, like mist or fog. Also need to adjust hoof placement of the front legs, since the fronts and backs are not in a good line right now.

Here's a little paint sketch I started tonight. I'm working with new brushes and techniques, but it's very much like real painting - the method is the same. I have layed in my basic shapes and colors and am now going back on my second pass to tighten things up. Everything is a little fuzzy from using the big, soft brushes, but it will begin to look crystal clear as I sharpen edges and adjust contrast. I'm thinking a lot about Stubbs in this painting -- the horse posing majestically, well lit in a gothic, implied background. I'm really liking it so far. As a side note, this horse's name is Fiona, and she is a Highland Pony currently residing in Scotland.

Commissioning Horse Portraits

All commissioned works of equine art are created using photographs of your horse. It is important to have clear, high-quality images in a pose you like. The quality of your initial images will reflect in your finished painting. I accept photographs through e-mail and also by post. Unless otherwise specified, hard copy photographs will be returned to you.

All portraits are painted digitally, which allows me to render a high level of detail, and produce the portrait at ten times the speed of "real" oil paint, which in turn dramatically decreases the cost. I strive for realism, and use special techniques to make your portrait indistinguishable from a traditional oil painting. Each print is one-of-a-kind, and signed as an original - no additional prints will ever be made.

Finished paintings can be printed any size and on any quality of paper. High quality giclee prints on gloss canvas are recommended to give the most authentic look, but satin finish paper is also a beautiful option. Printing and shipping costs will be added onto the final price of the painting.

Pricing:
Portrait (head and neck) - $250
Full Body - $350
+ background - add $75

Paintings without a specified background will be painted on a colored "cloudy" backdrop that compliments your horse's coloration, or is a color of your choosing.

Knights of Avalon - Beltain In-Progress

This is an in-progress commission painting of a lovely draft horse named Beltain, a member of The Knights of Avalon Jousting Troupe. I have been creating a series of paintings for the Knights of A, this being the third. I'm using some new techniques, which I'm thoroughly enjoying, and I'm really liking the progress so far, though I feel it's too "clean" at this point, especially around the feet. Look for more updates in the future.
